Basketball Success

Congratulations to Shaun Craig of S1 and Michael Walker of S3 who are currently involved in the Scotland National Basketball squads. Michael recently represented Scotland Under 15s in Barcelona and Shaun is currently away in Swedenwith the Under 13′s. The boys have both shown huge amounts of commitment to be a part of their respective squads, well done boys!

The Under 15 Basketball team completed their preparations for the Stirling Basketball League Finals with a 48-44 win over Bannockburn in a very tight and competitive match.

Race for Life

There are nearly 100 pupils, staff and parents in the Stirling High School Race for Life Team taking part in this year’s sponsored 5k event at Stirling University. The girls hope to raise more than £1000 for Cancer Research. If you would like to sponsor the team you can text STIR99 to 70070 with £(your donation).

Golf Taster Sessions at Stirling High

From Wednesday 15th May, Stirling High will be running some fun taster golf sessions for boys. These sessions will be from 3.30-4.30 in the PE dept and are open to pupils who want to try golf for the first time, or maybe have a limited experience of golf. If you need more information, see Mr Durno in the PE dept.

Eco Club BBQ

After a good years work by the Eco Club in Stirling High School, Technicians arranged the annual BBQ for Eco Club members. It looked like it was going to be a wet day but 20 minutes before the BBQ was about to begin the sun shone though making a perfect day for outdoor eating. Pupils and staff tucked into huge amounts of fresh fruit salad as well as veg and beef burgers. Special thanks to Michael Moore – Butcher in Cambusbarron for supplying the beef burgers. The BBQ took place on the environmental roof learning area. Over the year Eco Club have enjoyed various activities. One coming up is the continuation of the Orchard Project. Margaret Miller of Forth Environment link has completed workshops with pupils from the Eco Club looking at pollination. This will be a great help as it will further our understanding of raising a successful orchard.

Battlefields Trip

On the evening of 5th May the latest group of S2 pupils fromStirling High School to have participated in the Battlefields Experience arrived back in Stirling, safe and sound. Our party was led by Ms Notman (History/ Modern Studies) , supported by Mrs Nicol (Chemistry/Science) and Mr Clark (Maths). Once again, Robin was our expert guide from Mercat Tours. Our coach had set off on Tuesday evening and we were able to spend some time in the fascinating city of Brugge on the Wednesday afternoon before heading for Diksmuide, the Belgian base for our tour. For the next three days Robin guided pupils and staff around the First World War battlefields of the Ypres Salient and the Somme. Highlights included visits to Sanctuary Wood, Hill 60, the Wellington Quarry tunnels at Arras, NewfoundlandPark, the Thiepval Memorial, Vimy Ridge, Lochnagar Crater, and Tyne Cot. Our party attended the Menin Gate ceremony on Saturday evening before paying our respects to former pupils at our own ceremony later that evening at Poelkapelle. Mr Clark was our principal photographer and he is putting together a digital record of the trip to be presented to pupils and staff who took part in our visit to the Great war sites. Without delay we are making plans for our trip next year when we will mark the centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914.

Litter picks have taken place in the community every Thursday for 5 years now with different year groups and members of the local community. Stirling High continues to work hard to minimise litter through raising awareness at every opportunity and Clean Up Scotland and the Litterless campaign provide a great platform to get the message out there.
As Stirling High School’s Charities Committee is part of the School Friends of Strathcarron Initiative, 4 members of this Committee were invited to join other invited guests in the gardens of Strathcarron Hospice to visit Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal. It was a beautiful sunny day and so all were delighted to be able to represent Stirling High School on Friday 19th April. The Charities Committee has supported Strathcarron Hospice this year and has raised a magnificent total of £606.59 which has been a great team effort from all of its members in S5 & S6. Throughout the year they have enjoyed raising money through themed coffee mornings, quiz night, Strathcarron Stars and a very kind contribution from Stirling High’s Trash Fashion Show. As well as raising money the committee has also created a strong partnership with Strathcarron Hospice which members of the Committee have had the opportunity to visit and see the great work that they do. Overall as a Committee, they have raised a fantastic total of £3617.49 by supporting local, national and international charities throughout this academic year. Well done to everyone involved!!!

‘Positive Relations : Positive Behaviour’

This week parents, pupils, teachers, community members and local agencies met to create a new behaviour policy forStirlingHigh School. The school is developing a new policy called ‘Positive Relations: Positive Behaviour’ within a Restorative framework being rolled out across the local authority. Research shows that Restorative approaches to behaviour management help young people in developing a better understanding of responsibility and accountability whilst improving relationships and attainment in the long term. The consultation was held on 12 March and mixed groups of young people and adults looked at a variety of scenarios; both negative and positive, and discussed the best way to promote positive relationships and positive behaviour. The decision to use such methods has been welcomed by parents, pupils and staff and is an approach encouraged by research. Mrs Scullion (Head teacher) would like to thank everyone who was involved in this progressive approach to behaviour policy development.
